Mitochondrial diseases are a group of diseases that cause multisystemic effects due to Mitochondrial cytopathies, mitochondrial dysfunctions and/or mtDNA defects.

Mitochondrial diseases are divided into three groups.

• Patients with known syndromes accompanied by specific mtDNA abnormalities
• Patients with a group of clinical features with mtDNA defects,
• Patients with an atypical clinical presentation thought to have a pathological DNA mutation
